Are You an Empath, Intuitive or Both?

If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Am I an empath? Am I intuitive? Is there even a difference?” you're not alone.

These words get used a lot, especially in spiritual or self-growth spaces. And if you’ve ever felt deeply, sensed things without knowing why, or walked away from a conversation feeling totally drained, it’s natural to start wondering what’s really going on.

Empathy and intuition are often talked about together. They’re connected, but they’re not the same. And understanding how they’re different can help you feel more grounded in your own energy and more confident in how you move through the world.

What it means to be an empath

Being an empath means you feel other people’s energy in a very real way. You might take on their emotions, feel physical sensations in your body that aren’t yours or notice a shift in your mood that seems to come out of nowhere.

This goes beyond just being caring or emotionally aware. It’s energetic. Empaths tend to have open, highly sensitive nervous systems that absorb what’s going on around them without meaning to.

You might:

  • Pick up on someone’s emotions before they even say anything

  • Walk into a space and instantly feel heavy, anxious or emotional

  • Feel deeply affected by other people’s pain, even if you don’t know them

  • Need more rest and time alone to clear your energy and recharge

  • Feel confused about whether your feelings are actually your own

Being an empath isn’t a weakness. But without understanding what it actually means or having tools to support your sensitivity, it can feel overwhelming. You might overextend yourself trying to fix or soothe everyone else and lose track of your own needs in the process.

That’s why awareness and boundaries matter. Not to shut your sensitivity down, but to help you work with it in a way that feels steady and clear.

What it means to be intuitive

Intuition is your inner knowing. It’s a sense of what feels true, aligned or right for you, even if you can’t explain why.

Your intuition might speak through physical sensations (like a gut feeling), a subtle nudge, mental images or even just a quiet sense of “yes” or “no” that doesn’t come from logic but still feels clear.

You might:

  • Know something is off before anyone says it out loud

  • Feel pulled toward or away from something for no obvious reason

  • Get clear messages or guidance in still moments

  • Have hunches or gut instincts that turn out to be right

  • Feel like there’s a quiet voice within you that knows what you need

Intuition is internal. It’s about your relationship with yourself, not the energy of the people around you.

And here’s something to remember:
Everyone has intuition.

Intuition isn’t reserved for a few gifted or “spiritual” people. It’s something we’re all born with. It’s just that most of us were never taught how to listen to it or trust it.

Not everyone is an empath. But everyone is intuitive.

Can you be both?

Absolutely. Many women are.

Being intuitive means you have access to inner guidance. Being an empath means you’re also tuned in to the emotional and energetic experiences of others. If you’re not sure how to tell the difference, it can feel messy. You might second-guess your gut, feel unclear, or carry energy that isn’t actually yours.

When you begin to understand both parts of you—and learn how to notice what’s coming from outside versus what’s coming from within—everything starts to shift.

You feel more grounded.
You make decisions that feel aligned.
You stop holding onto energy that was never yours to begin with.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by everything you’re picking up, or unsure whether your inner voice can be trusted, you’re not doing anything wrong.

You’re just learning how you work. And that awareness is a powerful place to begin.
